How to Slovenia

August 18, 2019

There are close to seventy milk vending machines in Slovenia, enabling consumers to come and get as much or as little raw milk from local farms as they need in their own container or one that can be bought from the machine itself.

The first milk vending machines were introduced in some European states (Switzerland, Italy and France) in the mid-1990s, while the first milk machine arrived in Slovenia in 2009, and soon many more joined it. Milk machines became increasingly popular among the population, who preferred raw milk straight from the farmer instead of treated milk from retailers. Many farmers, who get the full purchase price from the vending machines (1 EUR/L), but  only 30% of that from milk merchants, believe that the raw milk safety scare of 2011 was in fact orchestrated by milk traders, who were worried about the future of their business once farmers were given direct access to consumers through the milk machines.

Eight years later, milk sales through vending machines have not been yet reached their pre-scare levels, but are certainly on the rise again. Moreover, with the plastic waste problem that has hit the minds of Western consumers after China banned imports of recyclables beginning with 2018, milk vending machines make more sense now than ever, as a way to support farmers,  reduce waste and get a higher quality product.

The milk in the machines has to be changed every 24 hours and is kept at 4 degrees Celsius. A list of milk vending machines in Slovenia can be found here.

And this is how they are used:

Youth is supposed to be madness, but young people also have their concerns

How many times have you wished you could grow at once? You could then decide when to study, eat chocolate or play video games.

Fino, kajne?

Fine, right?

However, the world of over 300,000 young people entering the adult world is not always rosy. Youth organizations are drawing attention to this on today's International Youth Day.

»Največji izziv današnjih mladih je zagotovo ustrezna rešitev stanovanjskega vprašanja,« pravi Jasmina Opec Vöröš, vodja zagovorništva pri Mladinskem svetu Slovenije (MSS).

"The biggest challenge for today's youth is certainly the proper solution to the housing problem," says Jasmina Opec Vöröš, head of advocacy at the Youth Council of Slovenia (MSS).

Young people who want to leave the home they lived in as children find it difficult to rent, let alone buy, an apartment. They are scarce or so expensive that young people cannot afford them at all, adds Jasmina Opec Vöröš.

Although youth unemployment has decreased in recent years, many still do not earn enough.

Their pay is not enough for rent, and banks do not want to lend money to those without regular income.

»To vpliva na osamosvajanje mladih, saj si težko ustvarijo družino,« poudarja sogovornica.

"This affects the independence of young people, because they have a difficult time starting a family," said one interviewee.

Youth Day has been celebrated since 1999 at the initiative of the United Nations General Assembly.

The theme of this year is the transformation of education. The UN wants education to be accessible to all young people.

"It is also a great challenge to provide jobs for highly educated young people, especially in places other than major urban centres," points out Jasmina Opec Vöröš.

Fortnite je zelo drugačen od resničnega življenja

Fortnite is very different from real life

Blaž Lešnik is the only Slovenian who has managed to qualify for the biggest Fortnite video game tournament.

About 40 million players from around the world participated online in the qualifications for the final tournament.

Without the hard work of playing video games, there is no success, says the sixteen-year-old high school student, known by teammates under the alias K1nzell, who plays for Team Atlantis.

One hundred made it to the finals at the New York Tennis Stadium, including Blaž, who finished 30th. He won a prize of €45,000.

Kako je potekal turnir?

How did the tournament go?

V New York smo odpotovali približno teden dni pred turnirjem.

We travelled to New York about a week before the tournament. We then trained there most of the time to get used to playing in a different environment.

V nedeljo smo odšli na stadion okoli štiri ure pred začetkom tekmovanja. Približno ob enih popoldan so organizatorji poskrbeli za koncert DJ-ja Marshmella.

On Sunday, we went to the stadium about four hours before the start of the competition. At about one in the afternoon, the organisers arranged for a concert by DJ Marshmello.

Takoj po koncu se je začel turnir.

Immediately after this finished the tournament began.

It went great as I finished 5th after the fourth game. This was by chance and due to the increased number of players in my chosen "landing step", Sunny Steps, then everything went as planned.

Kako so potekale priprave na tekmovanje?

How did the preparations for the competition go?

Fortnite igram že približno dve leti, torej odkar obstaja.

I've been playing Fortnite for about two years now, so they were happening all that time.

Every day I played for many hours, which eventually paid off.

Fortnite is a game that combines fighting, exploring and building a virtual world. What do you particularly like about the game?

Fortnite is a unique video game. It immediately caught my attention as it was the only one which includes creativity.

V kakšnem smislu?

In what sense?

I like how each individual player or their way of playing can be different from the others.

You can be very creative in Fortnite, and this can make you better than most.

V igri je tudi kar nekaj nasilja. Kako to razumeš?

There is also quite a bit of violence in the game. How do you understand that?

I do not view this as violence, as the game is very different from real life.

Koliko časa na dan posvetiš Fortnitu?

How much time a day do you dedicate to Fortnite?

Many hours to stay at such a high level, which is also very difficult.

Kaj še počneš v prostem času?

What else do you do in your spare time?

Veliko časa mi vzame šola, zato večino prostega časa posvetim igranju oziroma treniranju Fortnita.

A lot of the time I have school, so I spend most of my free time playing or coaching Fortnite.

Kaj si še želiš doseči?

What else do you want to achieve?

In the future, when I play I want to focus on video recording and live streaming on Twitch or YouTube.

As evident from the video above, the possibility of hitting a wild animal while driving is quite high in Slovenia. The hunters’ association thus recommends special attention be paid in the early evening hours and in the areas where warning signs are placed.

In the event of a collision, the driver should first take care of their own safety by putting on a reflective vest, then marking the roadway with a triangle for the safety of other drivers and calling the emergency number 112 to inform the centre about the accident.

The emergency centre operator will then send the hygiene service to remove the animal carcass or hunters to follow the injured animal and assess its chances of survival. The procedure should be observed in support of the sustainable management of the hunting area. The removal of a deer or any other game animal by oneself is against the law. According to the provisions of the veterinary legislation, such meat is considered as potentially tainted and consequently unsuitable for consumption, as it has not been examined and established whether or not it contains infectious diseases that can be transmitted.

Recent figures from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia show that 45 adoptions were recorded in the country in 2018. Before their adoption 31 of these children lived in Slovenia, while 14 children were adopted from abroad, coming from eight different countries. In 24 of these 45 cases the child was adopted by a couple, got two new parents, while in 20 cases the child was adopted by a spouse/partner of the child’s biological parent, a so-called partner adoption.

As this latter might be of interest to our readers, we got in touch the a local Center za socialno delo and found out what papers are needed if you plan on adopting you’re Slovenian’s partner’s child. Not that the whole process can take up to one year, and that some of the documents (such as health and criminal background) should be no more than six months old.

The eight documents needed are:

Izisek iz rojstne matične knjige – Birth certificate

Izpisek iz poročne knjige  –  Marriage certificate

Potrdilo o nekaznovanju – Criminal record check

Potrdilo o tem, da ni vložena pravnomočna obtožnica in bila izdana obsodilna sobda – Certificate showing you have not been convicted of a crime (if you have no convictions, this is covered by the criminal record check)

Zdavniško potrdilo – Health test (including a thorough drug test)

Potrdilo o državljanstvu  – Citizenship papers (passport)

Potrdilo o zaposlitvi in obseme dohodku za zadnje tri mesece – Details of your employment and income for previous three months

Potrdilo, da vlagateljema niso bile odvzete roditeljske pravice oz. nista postavljena pod skrbništvo – A certificate showing that you have not lost your parental rights (not available in all countries)

Prvi človek na Luni spremenil svet

The first man on the Moon changed the world

Written by Katarina Bulatović, translated by JL Flanner & G Translate

»Majhen korak za človeka, a velik skok za človeštvo.«

"A small step for a man, but a giant leap for mankind."

These are the famous words spoken 50 years ago by American the astronaut Neil Armstrong and forever written in the history of mankind.

Together with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, on July 16, 1969, in Apollo 11, the Saturn 5 rocket flew into space.

Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin were the first from Earth to land on the surface of the Moon.

Na Luni sta bili dve uri in pol, nabrala sta vzorce prahu in kamenja, se fotografirala in v njeno površje zapičila ameriško zastavo.

They spent two and a half hours on the Moon, collected dust and stone samples, took photographs, and planted the American flag on its surface.

Tedaj so se trije astronavti prvič predstavili javnosti. Sprejeli so jih kot narodne junake.

The Apollo 11 returned to Earth on July 24th. The three astronauts were then first introduced to the public. They were greeted as national heroes.

ZDA in Sovjetska zveza sta tedaj tekmovali, katera bo v osvajanju vesolja prva.

The United States and the Soviet Union were then competing who would be the first in the conquest of space.

Although landing on the Moon was a great victory for the Americans, this event also changed society forever. It was a success for humanity, not just for Americans.

Ukrepajmo zdaj tudi mi!

Let's take action now!

Written by Sonja Merljak Zdovc, translated by JL Flanner & G Translate

This summer, the government has important climate documents on the table.

These are the documents with which it can take such decisive measures so that Slovenia can follow the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

"In order for climate change to become a priority for politicians and to treat it as a problem that affects every individual, we decided to make an urgent appeal. We want the government to deal with this problem in a way that will prevent the climate catastrophe that is threatening us, "says Katarina Bervar Sternad of the Legal Information Center (PIC), who is making this call along with many other organizations.

Climate change can lead to floods, droughts, avalanches as well as other dangers associated with the climate and environment in which we live.

»To je nekaj, čemur nihče ne more ubežati,« dodaja Katarina Bervar Sternad.

"This is something that no one can escape," adds Katarina Bervar Sternad.

Scientists say that the Earth cannot warm by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, that is, at a time when there were no factories. This is half a degree less than they initially thought. They have found that we have already done too much damage to the environment, so the measures taken must be more radical.

»Preprečiti moramo vse, kar lahko prispeva k slabšanju okolja, v katerem živimo,« poudarja Katarina Bervar Sternad.

"We must prevent everything that can contribute to the deterioration of the environment in which we live," stresses Katarina Bervar Sternad.

Od ljubezni do nasilja je včasih le majhen korak

It's only a small step from love to violence

In Slovenia there rarely happen horrific events like in movies or TV shows.

But this year, even children heard that some girl wanted to cut off her hand to get money from an insurance company. [See details here]

https://www.total-slovenia-news.com/news/3211-woman-cuts-off-own-hand-in-ljubljana-fraud-case

She was persuaded by her boyfriend Sebastian Abramov, who was previously named Sebastjan Colaric, , but then changed his surname. Abramov is also suspected of murdering his previous girlfriend Saro Weber in March 2015.

In recent days, many people have talked about a severe attack on a Maribor judge. When she arrived home on Saturday afternoon, about ten days ago, she was attacked, and she was beaten so badly that she is still in hospital.

The police investigated whether the cause of the attack was linked to her job or private life.

Specifically, judges often enouncter the worst criminals, and many times they have been threatened.

But the police have now reported that the attack was linked to a judge's private life.

Sodnica je, poroča mariborski časopis Večer, nameravala zapustiti svojega partnerja.

The judge, according to the Maribor newspaper Večer, intends to leave her partner.

Policisti so zoper domnevnega storilca podali kazensko ovadbo zaradi poskusa umora.

The police have filed a criminal complaint against the alleged perpetrator for attempted murder. According to Večer's reporters, the alleged perpetrator of this serious attack is the judge's partner, whom the police have never dealt with before with regard to domestic violence.

Domestic violence is also not rare in Slovenia.

In NGOs, they often say that the worst violence against women usually happens when a partner, whether a husband or boyfriend, is told to leave.

Domače Naloge in Prosti Čas

Homework and Free Time

Written by Sonja Merljak Zdovc, translated by JL Flanner & G Translate

School is almost over for the next two months.

Many of the last days of school are devoted to travelling around the countryside or wider area, going to camps, or having relaxing fun on the school playground.

Domače naloge in popoldansko delo za šolo so že daljna preteklost, saj imate učenci ocene že zaključene.

Homework and afternoon work for school are in the distant past, as students have already completed their grades.

Or have they? The Association of Parents of the Parents of Slovenia (ZASSS) has not yet forgotten the work for the school that you take home.

The results of research carried out by parents of elementary school students have been presented.

In kaj so ugotovili?

And what did they find?

Anton Meden, predsednik ZASSS.

"The survey showed that only just over a fifth of students do all homework, learning and other work for the school in less than an hour. A quarter of them need up to two hours for this, one-fifth between two to three hours. Approximately fifteen percent of children need about three to four hours, while the remaining fifth even more than four hours," says Dr. Anton Meden, President of ZASSS.

slovene english dual text homework.JPG

Šolsko delo doma v urah. Vir: ZASSS /  School work at home in hours. Source: ZASSS

Homework is intended for repetition of content, and this is useful for learning, says Meden, since the brain gains knowledge by repeating it.

»A razlike v obsegu domačega dela so velike.

"And the differences with regard to homework are great. Families where children spend a lot of time for this run out of time for other activities. In the vast majority of cases, family members help schoolchildren. By examining the data we can conclude that pupils whose parents cannot help them parents have worse grades. "

A survey, which was carried out among primary school students by the Institute of Education, showed slightly different data.

According to their data for homework, the majority (55.9 percent) of pupils spend up to 30 minutes, followed by 29.3 percent up to one hour. With regard to studying, 64.3 percent of pupils spend up to 1 hour a day, except for before tests when they study more.

Roglič na zgodovinskih stopničkah

Roglic on the historic podium

On Sunday after a countless hills, falls, abrasions, bruises and bumps in tired legs, a thrilling three-week cycling race was concluded in Italy.

The final 21st stage brought the already exhausted riders to Verona, where they were waiting to start the last 17-kilometer ride on time.

The Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič, who had previously won both time trials, was starting in tenth place.

Primož was optimistic about the pink t-shirt and hoped that he could be the winner.

In the end, the young man from Zasavje made do with third place. This is a historic success for Slovenian cycling. Jan Polanc also got 14th place.

Primož, in the last stages of the race, was also supported by a number of Slovenian fans.

He was grateful to them, even though one of them made him lose valuable seconds because of an unwise move. The cheerleader pushed him to the slaughter for a few seconds, but he did so with a “bear’s favour” [idiom: a well-intentioned action that causes harm], as Primož got a ten-second penalty.

Primoz arrived in Verona in fourth place. He was 23 seconds behind the person in third.
