Things to do in the capital. 

Going by the number of places downtown closed for their annual vacations, and those open but almost empty, we must be near the bottom of the low season, but there’s still a few things going on this week, including the last few days of the Bobri festival of free events for children (see here), Prešeren Day, a national holiday that takes place on Thursday February 8, and the Pust carinval (see here).

CINEMA

Kinodvor – Films playing this week include Call Me by Your Name and Dolphin Man, plus the premieres of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Lady Bird.

EXHIBITIONS

This week’s big new show is NeoRealismo: the New Image in Italy, 1932–1960 at the National Gallery, as shown below, and which you can read about here.

The National Museum of Ljubljana has The Past Under the Microscope. Scientific Analyses in Museums on until the end of April.

 

The Marij Pregelj retrospective at the Moderna galerija’s main branch, near Tivoli. Well worth the entrance fee, this occupies several large rooms, with the the works from the last decade of the painter’s life being especially impressive. Highly recommended and showing until May.

The exhibition Jure Šajn: Picking Up Lines, hosted by DobraVaga (Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 5, 1000 Ljubljana), continues until February 17, examining “the transformation of the visual in the format of an artist's book”.
 
The same venue also has the MENT music festival affiliated AppointMENT 2.0_______Music Poster Exhibition until March 3. This sees 69 local artists using risographic printing to produce music posters. Prints have been produced in limited runs of 20 copies, and are available at the gallery, numbered and signed by the author, for 15 EUR each.

The City Museum hosts an extensive exhibition on Medieval Ljubljana until May 2, 2018.

The Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary, aka the Balassi Institute (at Barvarska steza 8, Ljubljana, not far from Dragon Bridge), working in association with the MAO (Muzej za arhitekuro in oblikovanje) continues its show on Hungarian and Slovene film and marketing posters from the 1960s and 70s, such as that shown above, which runs until February 23 and is free to enter.
 
Afghanistan - Slovene Views, continues at the Slovene Ethnographic Museum and lasts until March 30, 2018.

The Galerija Jakopič (Slovenska 9) continues its exhibition of works by Tihomir Pinter, the Croatian photographer known for his shots of everyday life in Yugoslavia, see above, the first major retrospective of his works since the 1960s. The show runs until March 3.
 

LGBTQ

Klub Tiffany – February 8 Legebitra will co-host Café Night, with an open stage. Click the venue name for details. The Klub will also having a party for Pust on February 10, featuring Dj Papi & Dj Protein

MUSIC & CLUBS

Channel Zero – February 9 will see an evening of "A like-minded group of individuals conspiring to advance their SoundSystem culture concepts", an event going under the name DeepEnd! x DubLab - chapter X. w. Egoless. The next night is Level 10: Duds (UK), Maraudeur + oOo.

Gala Hala – Friday night is Pod Pritiskom: Breakbeat pressure, with a music policy of breakbeat, big beat, broken beat, funky breaks, and nu skool breaks.

Grand Hotel UnionNigel Kennedy will be dropping his h’s and playing the fiddle on February 10, but here’s a video of him before all that:

Klub Cirkus – February 9 sees Bolnca ft. Matroda, with big room anthems, EDM, future house, trap, and dance, while Saturday the 10th there’s a costumed Pust party with Matthew Z Vs DJ Dey.

Klub Gromka – The Klub gets into a carnival mood with either DJane Wonder Woman or DJ Wonder Woman, the site isn’t clear, on February 10. Whatever the DJ’s real name, the night promises that “the speakers will squeeze disco sounds of gold and silver era, protect you against the attack of evil forces and make sure you dance all night long!”

Klub K4 – Wednesday night is trap night with Dirty Sprite IV, featuring Bor$aleano, Cookie, Mili Khumara, and Pinki Paciotti. Friday is one for the old scenesters and those living on borrowed nostalgia, with a night called Techno Oldies Goldies, set to feature old school house as well as techno.

Kino Šiška – Sunday, February 11, there will be show by King Krule, although it already seems to be sold out. See some of what you’ll be missing below.

Orto BarŠmucig Švanc are playing Friday and Saturday night.

OPERA, THEATRE, DANCE

Cankerjev dom – Cankerjev dom’s international flamenco bieniale runs from February 9–13. The full program is here, but the headline name is Rocío Molina in Fallen from Heaven, on February 10, but there’s lots more to enjoy.

Pocket Teater Studio – On Wednesday at 20:00 the Pocket Teater presents Meduza, in which, as per the website: “Slovenian contemporary dancers Urska Rupnik and Liza Šimenc will present their dance re-interpretation of one of the most endearing figures of the Greek classic mythology.” The place is tiny, so booking is recommended.

SiTi Teater – The legendary Svetlana Makarovič performs with the Mar Django Quartet in the Ballad of Sneguročka on Thursday at 20:00.

SNG Opera & Ballet – Mozart’s Don Giovanni will be performed February 6, Tuesday, at 19:30.

SPORT

Futsal Euro 2018 continues at Arena Stožice until February 10, with tickets and upcoming games here.

MISC.

Ziferblat – Monday 20:00, Let’s Talk Slovene; Friday 17:00 Chess Club.
