Maribor is home to the world’s oldest vine that still produces grapes, and a little wine, after more 400 years of growth. The plant itself has its own home, The Old Vine House (Stara trta) at Gorkega ulica 1, and it’s this location that’s the focus of many of the activities that will occur over the next seven weeks.

The Old Vine Festival is a celebration of food, wine and music that takes place each year, with the start marking the grape harvest from the old vine - which this year takes place on September 30 - and the whole thing culminating on St Martin’s Day (Martinovanje) on November 11, which this year is a Sunday, and thus ideal for enjoying the new wine at many events in Maribor and around Slovenia.

The seven weeks of the festival include wine tastings, food fairs, lectures, walks, guided tours, concerts, dances, boat trips and more, from the educational to the purely hedonistic.

A PDF of the full programme, in English and German, can be found here, while the official site is here, and the Facebook page is here. Na zdravje!
