Sisay Lemma Kasaye, from Ethiopia, won the 23rd Ljubljana Marathon and set a track record of 2:04:58, knocking 3 minutes 21 seconds off the previous fastest time, 2:08:19, achieved three years ago. The current world record for men is 2:01:39, as set by Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) earlier this year in Berlin.

The women's competition also saw a new record, with the Kenyan Visiline Jepkesho setting a time of 2:22:58, two minutes and 26 seconds faster than the 2009 record of 2:25:24. The current world record for women is 2:15:25, as set in 2003, in London, by Paula Radcliffe.

While the day’s events started in rain this only affected the 10k race, and the weather, though overcast, cleared up somewhat for the full marathon.

With regard to the 21k race, the men’s event was won by Rok Puhar, with a time of 1:07:20, while the women’s was won by Neja Kršinar, who completed the course in 1:17:47
