STA, 11 May 2018 - The opposition Democrats (SDS) appear to have affirmed their leading position in the polls with three weeks to go until the general election. The latest poll by Mediana gives them a full five-point lead on the non-parliamentary Marjan Šarec List, with the coalition Social Democrats a distant third.

All our election coverage can be found here, while our profiles of the major parties are here.

The SDS polls at 15.7%, with the Šarec List at 10.3% and the SocDems at 7.2%. Other parties likely to win enough votes to enter parliament include the opposition Left (5.5%), the ruling Modern Centre Party (4.2%), the coalition Pensioners' Party (3.8%) and the opposition New Slovenia (3.3%).

The Alenka Bratušek Party is close at 2.9%, as is the non-parliamentary National Party (2.2%). The non-parliamentary People's Party (2.2%) is the only other party to get more than 1%.

Just under a quarter were undecided, some 4% said they would not vote and 5% said they would not vote for any of the parties listed.

Mediana conducted the poll for public broadcaster RTV Slovenija between 3 and 10 May on a sample of 712 respondents.

The results are not directly comparable to previous polls.

Janja Božič Marolt, the chief pollster for Mediana, noted for the STA that this poll was conducted when the list of parties running in the election was finalised and respondents picked one.

In previous polls conducted by Mediana for private broadcaster POP TV, major parties were listed whereas the respondents themselves had to name any smaller parties that they preferred.

Notwithstanding the difference in methodology, the Mediana poll confirms earlier polling showing the SDS gaining ground on both the Šarec List and the Social Democrats, the trio having previously been neck-and-neck, within the margin of error.
