STA, 6 May 2018 - Prime Minister Miro Cerar met EU Council President Donald Tusk in Ljubljana on Sunday at the start of Tusk's two-day working visit to the country. Addressing the press after the talks, the pair stressed the importance of the European perspective for Western Balkan countries. Tusk praised Slovenia as a success story.

On days like to today it’s hard to imagine that less than two months ago there was snow on the ground and going out in short sleeves could put you in serious danger of having no fun, and perhaps even no fingers by the dawn. Now it’s all exposed limbs, sunglasses, gelato and lazing by the river, with the inside tables in many cafés and bars almost deserted, left to tourists having second thoughts about not venturing further for a terrace with room to spare, and aged goths hiding from the light.

In what may the last of the recent series of posts on Slovenia in WW2, at least for a while, this week’s trip to the archives has come back with some of the more striking images of the country near the end of the war and just after. All of these were taken in 1945, sourced from Wikimedia, and are in the public domain, with the photographer named if known.

STA, 4 May 2018 - Increasing social benefits is not a solution to poverty, what needs to be done is create new jobs and secure decent pay. This view was shared by representatives of political parties who took part in a panel discussion on poverty, which was organised in Ljubljana on Friday as part of the European Minimum Income Network project.

STA, 3 May 2018 - The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a key piece of EU legislation about personal data privacy which enters into force on 25 May, may cause quite a few legal challenges in Slovenia, since the bill aimed at implementing it will not be passed before the election. Companies are nevertheless busy preparing for the new rules.

STA, 4 May 2018 - The Slovenian government has assessed the EU Commission's proposal for the 2021-2027 EU budget framework as ambitious, noting that the overall amount is comparable to the current multi-year budget despite Brexit. It has, however, warned about what it believes are excessive cuts of rural development funds.
