STA, February 19, 2018 – Celje police have filed criminal complaints against four individuals aged 17 to 27 who are suspected of four brutal robberies in the areas of Celje, Velenje and Žalec in the east.

The robberies took place from November to early February in private homes in the evening, with the suspects wearing balaclava and using weapons, Celje criminal police head Damijan Turk told the press on Monday.

The suspects tied up some of the family members, beating them until they were told where the families kept money and other valuables.

They robbed the four families of more than a total of 89,500 euro in cash and jewellery.

Children witnessed two of the robberies.

Three men, one aged 25 and two 27, and a girl aged 17 were brought to an investigating judge on Sunday and remanded to custody.

Before the police made the arrests, they had searched the suspects' homes and used wiretapping.

Today they arrested another three persons, aged 18 to 20, one of them a Serbian citizen, who are believed to be connected with the gang.

Two of the seven suspects have had run-ins with the police before, explained Turk.

The number of robberies in Slovenia has been falling since 2010, while aggressive robberies were extremely rare, Aleš Kegljevič of the property crime unit at the General Police Administration explained.

The last aggressive robbery in the country was recorded in 2014.

Kegljevič also said that an average 20 robberies take place in private homes a year, while there was a total of 238 robberies in 2017, 12 more than in the year before.
