The STA reports on January 22, 2018, that a 48-year-old German citizen residing in the area of Ptuj without a registered residence has been apprehended for suspected use of counterfeit money. Several pieces of computer equipment and other items suspected to have been purchased with the counterfeit banknotes have been seized from the German as part of a house search.

An investigating judge has ordered custody for the German, who was arrested on 11 January by Ptuj police.

The Maribor Police Department told the press today that the arrest was made based on a number of reports of attempts to put counterfeit EUR 50 banknotes into circulation.

With the counterfeit banknotes, the suspect was buying drinks in bars and cheap items in shops in the Ptuj and Maribor areas, receiving genuine banknotes and coins as change.

The police reported the suspicion to the Ptuj District Court, which ordered a search of the premises the German was residing in.

After the arrest, the police established that a European arrest warrant had been issued against the suspect.
