STA, 13 August 2018 - A 19-year-old Polish man, who crashed into a police car during a Hollywood-style car chase in the Koper area last Monday, has been arrested in Italy and handed over to the Slovenian authorities.

The man, who had been stopped during the night while driving a stolen Polish car with fake license plates, had caused one of the most bizarre incidents in Slovenia in recent years.

After stopping and presenting a fake ID, the man darted off in his car, causing a chase that led to two of the officers trying to catch him getting involved in an accident and ending up in hospital, one of them with serious fractures.

He meanwhile intentionally crashed into another police car in the process, but managed to later escape in a car that was left running in a courtyard by a man who had gone to fetch the rest of his baggage.

While the man had left his real documents in his first car, the escape car was spotted by Italian police on the same day. The man was arrested in Grado on the Italian side of the border where he abandoned the car to try to continue his escape with a stolen bicycle.

The Italians handed him over to the Slovenian authorities last Wednesday and he is currently in custody in Koper.

To start with, he is facing five years in prison each for grand theft and for obstructing the performing of an official act or taking revenge upon an official person. Additional charges are likely, since it is clear that the Polish car he was first stopped in was also stolen.
