STA, 21 May 2018 - Israel summoned on Monday Slovenian Ambassador Barbara Sušnik over Slovenia's backing of a UN Human Rights Council resolution to set up an independent international inquiry into recent killings in Gaza.

The summons comes after Friday's vote at the UNHRC, in which the resolution was carried by 29 votes in favour, two against and 14 abstentions.

The commission will look into the events in recent weeks that have led to more than 100 deaths and many more injured among the Palestinians. It will report its findings to the council in the autumn.

Slovenia adopted a joint statement with Belgium and Spain expressing concern over the excessive use of force by Israeli authorities and backing the probe, the Slovenia Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has also summoned Spanish and Belgian envoys, the French news agency AFP reported.

The Slovenian and Spanish ambassadors were called in today, while the Belgian envoy is to be received tomorrow, the ministry said.
