Back to the 50s and 60s.

If you keep walking along Breg embankment and cross the street, heading away from the centre, perhaps looking right up the hill to see the Zois Pyramid, then you’ll soon come across Nostalgija Vintage Café Bar, and if you’re in luck some bicycles like this will be parked outside.

The riders of these meet up here and then go rides through the town, showing off their admirable contraptions, along with their quiffs and leather jackets. Because Nostalgija is no ordinary place, with both the name and décor making it quite plain this is a throwback to the mid-20th century, a time of jukeboxes, proto-rockers and an obsession with all things young and American.

As seen in these images, taken on a quiet afternoon in the low season, Nostalgija is a delight for those interested in mid-century design and Americana, with much to look at, remember and enjoy.

The ambiance is aided by the music, which is much as you’d expect. There are also occasional live performances in keeping with the theme, and in general if you like the idea of swing dances, The Stray Cats, the aesthetics of the old Las Vegas sign and Rout 66 then you’ll feel right at home (although this a café bar and not diner, so don’t expect a cheeseburger and fries).

Instead there are low armchairs and coffee tables, barber’s chairs and stools with swivel seats. A vintage Hoover vacuum cleaner and a Wurlitzer with singles and bubbles.

The drinks are cheap, at 2.50 for a bottle of Laško/Union and 2.70 for a draught Bernard, with a fair range of other beers, spirits and other drinks available. You can also can get a bag of crisps (aka potato chips) for just 1 EUR at the time of writing, including salt and vinegar, a great offer in this part of town.

Overall, if any of the above appeals then you’ll find Nostalgija a very enjoyable place to hang out in, even if near empty, and on a night with something special going on – as listed on the events page – it could easily be the best place in town. Nostalgija Vintage Café and Bar can be found at Krakovski nasip 4, with a good view of the river and is open from early till late.
