STA, February 5, 2018 - The Culture Ministry has appointed two ambassadors to mark the European Year of Cultural Heritage and encourage people to discover cultural heritage. They are rappers who adapted old Slovenian songs to their music.

The project, running under the common EU motto Our Heritage: Where Past Meets the Future, has been launched in early December on the Merry Day of Culture, the day Slovenia remembers the birth of one of its most celebrated poets, France Prešeren.

The ministry presented the project in more detail at a press conference on Monday. The aim is to raise awareness about cultural heritage, especially among young people.

Therefore the ministry got on board rapper Trkaj and university professor Igor Saksida, who together published a book that provides a modern take on Slovenian poetry classics a year ago.

The book also features a CD with rap versions of classic poems and original rap songs inspired by them, as well as several tracks with background music for readers to try rapping or reciting themselves.

Trkaj and Saksida have since toured schools across the country to perform their rap adaptations of classic poetry.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage is also supported by Costella, a water bottling company, which will bring to the market special edition bottles in about two weeks, featuring examples of Slovenia's cultural heritage, including the kurent traditional costume, traditional beehives and the potica cake.

One cent from each bottle will go to a special fund for the renovation of a heritage-listed property; which one will get the funds will be decided by Facebook users in an online vote.
