Digging a little deeper in the data, SURS finds that at the time of the most recent survey there were around 9,300 young families in Slovenia, defined as when the husband and wife or cohabiting partners are both aged under 30. Of these, around 4,750 are married, while 4,550 are not, with an average of 1.36 children per family.
Looking at all types of families, the data for the start of 2018 show that an average family in Slovenia has 1.16 children (1.56 children if only considering those families with children, accounting for three quarters of all families). The number of children per family is the lowest in the municipalities of Šalovci (1.38) and Lendava/Lendva (1.39), and the highest in Železniki (1.86 children per family) and Gorenja vas – Poljane (1.99).
Most families had only one child (55%), followed by families with two children (36%). The average age difference between the first and second child in families with two children was four years and one month, while in the families with five children it was much lower (two and a half years).
Also notable in the data: there were 15 families with 10 or more children, and three households in which inidviduals from five different generations live together.
