It’s a story we’ve told before, but it remains, to our mind, a small but pretty good one, an all too human of an easy mistake followed by mild and temporary suffering, the kind of thing most people have done once or twice in their lives – getting off at the wrong stop and spending the night on the streets.

Indeed, this misadventure would be unremarkable were it not that the people involved were James and Nora Joyce, on a train from Zurich bound for Triest (or Trst as it should more properly be called, since the port was still mostly occupied by Slovene-speakers in the year in question, 1904, the very year immortalized in Ulysses).

The couple got off a few stops too early, at Ljubljana, and were stuck in the city for the night, either without the money or inclination to get a room until the morning. They thus slept in a park, a small event that’s gone down in history and is marked by a plaque on platform six of the station, as shown above, and is something to look out for the next time you’re waiting there – just take care not to miss your connection.
