Earlier this year our big sister site, the award-winning Total Croatia News, ran an interview with Matija Babic, the man behind TasteAtlas, a website that aims to provide a global map of local dishes, with almost 6,000 entries as of today, and still growing.

As Babic said at the time, in a Croatian dining context that’s well-suited for this time of year, when half of Slovenia seems to be on vacation in Dalmatia:

TasteAtlas is the world's first global map of local dishes. We register information about traditional dishes and recipes, local ingredients and authentic restaurants. Additionally, we compile reviews from professional food critics and local experts with recommendations where a particular dish should be eaten. In short, when you visit Dalmatia: Tripadvisor will tell you where most tourists eat ice cream and pizza cut, while TasteAtlas will tell you that you should eat brudet, Imotski cake, fritule, and drink plavac mali and maraschino. We will also advise you to try brudet at the Senko tavern, pinca at Kirigin, etc. I talk about Dalmatia here, but we have the whole world covered in the same way. I believe that people increasingly want to try local stuff when travelling, and not bland general dishes. TasteAtlas is the only website in the world which at the moment provides this information in a high-quality way.

The Slovenian part of the site is still a work in progress, with just 31 dishes, from the iconic to the lesser known, such as pohorska gibanica, šelinka, mežerli, and bograč. For each dish there’s a description and often a recipe along with recommendations of where to eat it – which you can add to – as well as user comments.

The map presents an interesting way to look at the country, and many others, from another perspective, and perhaps to plan a dining experience or two when on the road. If you haven’t already clicked on one of the links then you can check out the front page of the site here, and explore the world through its dishes, perhaps adding some local colour about any places you know.
