A member of the legendary Magnum Photos Agency, Morath was born just over the Austrian border in Graz, in 1923. Her family soon moved to Germany, where she grew up during the years of Nazi rule and the Second World War.

Morath started working at Magnum in Paris in 1949, at the invitation of Robert Capa, doing editorial work. It was at this time, she later said, that she learned how to take photographs, although by studying the contact sheets of Henri Cartier-Bresson rather than by working with a camera.

It was in the 1950s that Morath really started work in the medium, and the show contains images from these years right up until the end of her life, in 2002. It was then, aged 78, that she returned to the land of her birth and explored both sides of the Austrian and Slovenian border.

The show, titled simply Inge Morath – Retrospective, offers a chance for visitors to spend some time learning about this remarkable woman, of interest both for her life and work, and is well worth the trip the Maribor Art Gallery (Umetnostna galerija Maribor), which can be found at Strossmayerjeva 6 (see the map at the end of this story).
