In 1912 a tramway was introduced between Piran and Lucija, with its official opening on today’s date.

By then trams were already known to Ljubljana (with the service running from 1901 to 1958), while trolleybuses had operated in from Piran since 1909.

Trolleybus in Piran

At the time this was also the first trolleybus line in the Balkans, but it did not prove profitable, which is why they replaced it with a tramway.

The line was five and a half kilometres in length, and ran from Tartini Square in Piran to the train station in Lucija. Trams carried passengers along the Slovenian coast for about 40 years, until August 1953, when the rails and electric wiring were scrapped and the trams themselves were sent to Bosnia, where they were included into the regular tram service in the city of Sarajevo.
