Slovenians, alpinists and mountain lovers in general recently marked the 240th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Triglav, and are preparing for the Aljaž Tower, which has sat atop the summit for 123 years, to be taken down for some much needed repairs. We’ve thus been particularly sensitive to news of this iconic topographic feature in the last few days, and so when we saw this incredible photo our choice for the week was made. It was taken at noon on September 04, 2016, but looks like it could have been painted long before, say in 1778, the year the mountain was conquered by Luka Korošec, Lovrenc Willomitzer, Matija Kos, and Štefan Rožič.
It was taken by Matej Tomšič, who titled the work “igra sonca in oblakov”, or “play of sun and clouds”, a non-professional photographer, without an Instagram or 500px, who kindly agreed to share this image with us and our readers.
