STA, 16 May 2018 - The number of unaccompanied minors who asked for international protection in the EU countries last year almost halved compared to 2016 to 31,400, but the figure increased in Slovenia, from 245 to 390, Eurostat data show.

Minors travelling on their own who asked for asylum in the EU accounted for around 15% of all asylum seekers under the age of 18.

The majority were men (89%) and came mostly from Afghanistan (17%), the European Commission Representation in Ljubljana quoted Eurostat's figures in a press release.

In Slovenia, 99% of all unaccompanied minors asking for asylum in 2017 were men, and 10% were younger than 14.

They accounted for slightly over 76% of all minors who asked for asylum. The vast majority, or 270, came from Afghanistan, according to Eurostat.

Meanwhile, one in three unaccompanied youths filing an asylum request in the EU, or slightly more than 10,000, did so in Italy.

Placing second was Germany (9,100), followed by Greece (2,500), United Kingdom (2,200) and Austria (1,400).
