STA, 21 April 2018 – As Israel was founded 70 years ago, on 14 May 1948, some 200 Slovenian Jews are estimated to have moved there from Slovenia, although the Jewish Community in the country does not have exact data.
Recognition has been in limbo since at least 2014.
Karl Erjavec, the Foreign Minister, remains strongly in favour, despite pressure from the US and Israel.
The main concern is the implications of recognition on Slovenia's relations with Israel and the US.
"Every context of self-determination is different. The context of self-determination and independence of Slovenia might be different than the one of Montenegro, or of Timor, Kurdistan ... or of Palestine."
"If the international community does not act, and act quickly, I'm afraid the two-state solution is lost forever."
Close links with Palestinians go back to the days of Tito and Arafat.
National Assembly will debate the issue on Wednesday.
Letter to Cerar claims the move would “be too early and very counterproductive.”
"We're defending the two-state solution," Erjavec said, adding that the decision was in line with the EU standards.
