A family affair.

June 08, 2018

If you live in Ljubljana or have visited anytime in the last few decades you may have seen xenia6, dressed in black and holding either a camera or glass of penina. She’s lived in the city all her life and knows it better than most, as clear from her Instagram page from which this week’s photo was drawn.

It shows Jože Plečnik’s Church of St. Michael on the Marshes (Cerkev sv. Mihaela na Barju), built between 1937 and 1939. The architect not only designed the building, but all the interior furnishings, including door handles, lamps, candlesticks and the main chandelier. Moreover, and as noted in Špela Kuhar and Rober Potokar’s wonderful Let's See the City: Ljubljana - Architectural Walks and Tours, it was a project that brought together the whole family. Jože designed it, his nephew, Karel Matkovič, was the priest who commissioned it, and his brother Andrej met most of the costs, funded in part by the legacy of his brother Janez.
