95 Migrants Caught Near Koper and Novo Mesto Over Weekend

STA, 20 August 2018 - Ninety-five illegal migrants were apprehended in the areas policed by the Koper and Novo Mesto police departments along the border with Croatia at the weekend. 

Forty-two were apprehended in the area of Koper, south-west, and 53 in the area of Novo Mesto, south-east, from Friday 6 AM to Monday 6 AM, the two police departments said in press releases on Monday.

Novo Mesto police apprehended the illegal migrants in the region of Bela Krajina and Posavje. 40 came from Pakistan, six from Iran, four from Afghanistan and three from Iraq. The police said the apprehended persons are still being processed.

In the first 15 days of August, 233 migrants who entered Slovenia illegally were apprehended by police in the area covered by the Novo Mesto Police Department, or an average 15 a day.

Meanwhile, the number of illegal migrants in this area reached 2,210 in the period between 1 January and 15 August, the police department told the STA. The numbers peaked in May, when 646 illegal migrants were apprehended there.

A total of 1,094 foreigners were returned back to Croatia during this period, according to the press release from the Novo Mesto Police Department.

Of the 42 foreigners caught by Koper police at the weekend, 16 were returned to Croatia, one person was fined and released, and 25 asked for international protection.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,036 foreigners were apprehended in the area crossing into Slovenia illegally on land between 1 January and 19 August, up 248% from the same period last year.

The majority came from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Algeria and Iran, the department told the STA.
