STA, 7 July 2018 - An Italian caver injured himself in a cave near the village of Orlek near Sežana on Saturday afternoon and is now trapped in the cave. A rescue operation is under way but according to the Cave Rescue Service the operation is technically demanding and will involve cave expansion.

The man injured his leg at around 1 PM in Netopirjeva Jama (Bat's Cave) at the depth of around 80 metres. He was climbing together with a Slovenian caver, who called for help at around 2 PM.

Rescue efforts, in which 17 members of the Slovenian Cave Rescue Service and five Italian counterparts are taking part, were launched soon after that.

Seven rescuers, including a doctor and a medical technician, were sent into the cave, Maks Merela of the Cave Rescue Service told the STA.

The rescue operation is technically demanding and some narrow parts of the cave will need to be expanded to get to the injured man, Merela said, adding that this would significantly delay the rescue operation.
