Janković is suspected of demanding half a million euro from Gratel in March 2007 in exchange for which he allegedly granted the company the permission to dig roads to install optic cables.
Gratel transferred two 250,000 euro instalments to the municipality as a donation for renovation of Ljubljana Castle.
This enabled the telecommunications construction company to resume its work under a new development permit after Janković had initially banned the company from digging on public premises.
Unofficial information available to Delo indicates that the prosecution does not allege that Janković accepted the donation personally, but rather that he demanded it for the municipality.
Janković had already denied the allegation of bribery when the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) raided the offices of the Ljubljana municipality and several other locations in February 2014.
He denied having demanded a donation, arguing that the payment was compensation for the damage incurred by the municipality because Gratel had dug up wider conduits and installed more cables than agreed.
Janković unsuccessfully appealed against the charges, so the court will now decide whether Gratel's donation was a bribe as claimed by the prosecution or a damages payment as claimed by the mayor.
"The indictment is ludicrous, accusing me as mayor of obtaining a benefit for the municipality, something that is the mayor's job, after all," Janković commented.
According to Delo, Janković faces proceedings in at least ten more other cases, including ongoing investigations related to the construction of the Stožice sports complex.
