The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia is a goldmine of facts and figures, and this week we take a look at the tricky business of love when it comes to the authorities, with a brief look at the number of marriages and divorces for the latest year for which statistics are available, 2016.

In that year there were a total of 6,667 weddings. With regard to first marriages, the mean age of the groom was 31.9 years old, while that of the bride was 30.0. If we include second, third or more marriages in the data, then these ages rise to 35.3 and 32.6, respectively.

The most popular month to get married in was June, which saw 1,009 weddings, with the most popular day being June 18, on which 234 couples tied the knot.

Of the 6,667 marriages in 2016, 603 Slovene men married foreigners, while 616 Slovene women did the same, with most of these non-Slovene spouses being from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

While same-sex marriage is currently not an option in Slovenia, civil partnerships are possible, and 20 male couples married in 2016, along with nine female couples.

Turning to divorce, 2,531 couples decided to call it a day in 2016, with the average such marriage lasting 13.9 years. The men in these cases had a mean age of 46.3 years, compared to 43.4 years for the women. Around half all divorces involved couples with dependent children, with the mothers getting custody in 73.5% of the cases.
