Today’s dive into the archives is inspired by the upcoming Statehood Day, June 25, which marks Slovenia’s declaration of independence in 1991, and which led to a ten-day war to secure that status, as detailed on Wikipedia

The border crossings were a flashpoint, because it was here that the Slovenian Territorial Army (TA) needed to take control from the Yugoslav People’s Army (YPA) if the claim to independence was to be credible. This following four pictures show the crossing at Vrtojba, on June 26, 1991, at the arrival of the tanks column of the Yugoslav Army, all were taken by Miško Kranjec (and are shared under CC by 3.0). Uncredited imaged are from the Slovenian government, via Wikimedia.
